Acquisition of an ESA Letter and its Expiry
Emotional support animals (ESAs) are vital in boosting your mental health. Researchers recognize that ESAs can help lower levels of anxiety, stress and enable social engagement. However, they are specific Federal and Housing Laws that prohibit or restrict animals’ cohabitation with humans.

An ESA letter exempts you from the specific Fair Housing Act (FHA) and Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) laws restricting living and traveling with your pet. The ESA letter is issued by approved health practitioners, such as counselors and therapists for people with mental health conditions.
Who Qualifies for an ESA Certification
An ESA letter is a document issued by a mental health practitioner in the US. The document needs to have a valid signature and contact details of the provider. The letter is an indication that your pet is a necessity for your mental wellness. For you to be eligible for the ESA certification, you must meet the following conditions:
- Have an underlying mental condition-your condition needs to be listed in the US Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Conditions such as PTSD, depression, social anxiety, and OCD qualify.
- The mental condition deters you from everyday social life and working life.
- The ESA is playing a significant role in the management of the mental condition.
Airline Regulations for ESA
They are specific ACAA rules that prevent pet owners from traveling with their animals in commercial airplanes. For those airlines that allow, they charge a significantly high cost for the accommodation of the animals. The ESA letter allows your animal to accompany you at no extra cost.
If you present a valid ESA letter, you will be exempt from the various ACAA rules in all US states. Some airlines also demand an additional document to ensure the letter is authentic. You will be required to have a recently filled therapist’s from before your departure in such circumstances.
Expiry of the Airline ESA letter
ACCA demands that you present a current ESA letter to board a plane with an ESA. The letter needs to be from a licensed therapist or counselor. In most scenarios, the flight attendants might need to verify that the letter is genuine from the provider. Additionally, the letter needs to be updated and less than one year old from the date of issuance. If your letter is older than that, the flight attendant will not be willing to accommodate your animal, or you will have to incur extra charges for your animal.

Housing Regulations for ESA
The FHA view ESA as legal accommodation, even in residents that restrict people from living with pets. If you have any mental problems and require an ESA for a better livelihood, your landlord is obliged by the law to allow you to live with your animal. For the acceptance of accommodation, the Federal laws governing various housing conditions require that you have a valid ESA letter from a professional.
Your landlord should allow the ESA accommodation for free for the period you will be residing in their residence. Presenting the letter to your landlord when signing the leasing agreement prevents future conflicts about the animal. Your landlord has the authority to verify the authenticity of the letter by contacting the provider. However, under no circumstances should they access or discuss your mental problems with your therapists or counselors.
Expiry of the Housing ESA Letter
The Federal government of the US does not stipulate a specific period for the housing ESA letter expiry. It merely means that the housing documentation for ESA does not have an expiry date. Even though the letter does not have an expiry term presenting current documentation is the best way to avoid any conflicts with your housing agents.
To be on the safe side, renew your housing ESA letter annually. Most therapists will be reluctant to verify an outdated letter as your mental status might have drifted within the last couple of years. The verification process allows the reassessment of your mental condition and determines whether you still require the ESA for a better life.
What to do after the Expiry of your ESA Letter?
For the flight ESA documentation, annual renewal is mandatory, as stipulated by the Federal Law. For the Housing ESA letter, you can renew it annually though it is not compulsory. If your letter has expired, you should contact your therapist or counselor to renew your letter.
